NATURE OF WORK

 

Maintenance Repairmen work in the building, mechanical and electrical trades and are responsible for the maintenance and repair of public buildings and the equipment in them. Maintenance Repairmen 2 perform more difficult and complex duties.

 

Building Maintenance Foremen plan and supervise specific parts of a building maintenance/repair program or assist in planning and directing a comprehensive building maintenance/repair program.

 

Building Maintenance Supervisors plan and direct a complete building maintenance/repair program; develop schedules for preventive maintenance, repairs and alterations; assign work to maintenance staff; and inspect work in progress and upon completion.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.

 

Minimum Requirements

 

Maintenance Repairman 1 - Two years of experience in general maintenance work which has involved at least 2 of the building, electrical or mechanical trades; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

 

Maintenance Repairman 2 – Two years of experience as a Maintenance Repairman 1;  OR 4 years of experience in building and plant maintenance work, which has involved at least 2 of the building, electrical or mechanical trades; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

 

Building Maintenance Foreman - Two years of journey level experience divided between any 2 of the building, electrical, mechanical trades or landscaping; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

 

Building Maintenance Supervisor - Four years of supervisory experience in a variety of building construction and maintenance trades including experience in related mechanical trades; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

 

Clarification of Requirements

You may substitute related education for the required experience or appropriate experience for the required education.  Unrelated experience or education will not be accepted.

 

Experience Involving 2 Trades

You MUST show you have experience or training in AT LEAST 2 of the building construction, electrical or mechanical trades.  Examples of qualifying trades are:  Carpentry, Electrical, Masonry, Painting, Pipefitting, Plastering, Plumbing, Roofing and Heating/Air Conditioning.

 

Repair and/or trade experience in unrelated areas such as vehicles/automobiles, electronics, entertainment equipment, medical equipment or appliances is NOT acceptable.

 

Journey Level Experience

Journey level experience typically begins after completion of an apprenticeship program or after 4 years of experience and/or training learning the trade.

There are 65 filled Maintenance Repairman 1; 362 filled Maintenance Repairman 2; 30 filled Building Maintenance Foreman; and 4 filled Building Maintenance Supervisor positions located in agencies across the Commonwealth, primarily within the Pennsylvania Departments of Conservation and Natural Resources, and Public Welfare, and the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board.  The majority of positions are located in state mental health hospitals, mental retardation centers, state parks and other facilities located throughout the Commonwealth.

 

The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board plans to hire 6 Maintenance Repairmen 2 within the next 12 months.

 

Additional opportunities may occur due to normal turnover from retirements, promotions, transfers, resignations and so forth.

 

Seasonal Jobs

 

Each year, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources fills approximately 15 seasonal jobs.  These jobs are at state parks and forest district offices in rural areas throughout the state.  Seasonal work normally begins between March 1 and June 30 and lasts through September or early October.

 

If you are hired in a seasonal job, you will be paid only for the hours you actually work.
